Inspecting Your Tires - How To Tell If You Need New Tires

posted on

Checking your tires is an important part of making sure you are driving a safe vehicle. You should be checking your tires for tread depth, exposed cords or fabric strands, sidewall cracks and inflation at the very least, once a month. Especally before long road trips.

A simple walk around, checking for the most worn spot on your tires, A tread depth guage is available at any auto shop, but if you haven't purchased one, use a penny. With Lincolns head facing down, hold the penny with his body between your fingers, Insert the penny into the tire tread grooves. If you can see the top of Lincoln’s head, your tires are at 2/32nds of an inch or less of remaining tread. You need new tires immediately!

Ensuring you have proper pressure in your tires not only ensures you'll have a smooth ride and handling, but optimum fuel economy and provides the best traction possible. Tires that are under-inflated or over-inflated can feel loose when steering and will have an increased stopping distance in panic braking situations.

Most manufacturers recommend rotating your tires every 5000 to 7,000 miles. If you change oil every 3,000 miles, have your tires rotated every other oil change. If your vehicle can go longer between oil changes, such as 5000 or 6,000 mile intervals, then rotate tires with every oil change.
